Quick Add
Use Quick Add to add individual coin entries. Fill in:
- Emperor: The ruling emperor at the time
- Obverse Legend: Latin text from the portrait side
- Reverse Legend: Latin text from the type/reverse side
- Reverse Type: Description of what the reverse shows
- Date: Approximate year of minting
Click Preview JSON to see the structured format before saving.
Batch Import
Paste multiple legends separated by newlines. The system will:
- Auto-detect emperor names
- Tokenize abbreviations
- Group by category (titles, virtues, etc.)
- Show confidence scores
Data Storage
Data is stored in two places:
- JSON Files: Static data in
data/folder (pre-loaded) - localStorage: Browser storage for custom additions (persists)
When you decode a legend, both sources are merged automatically.
Token Categories
| Category | Examples | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Titles | IMP, CAES, AVG, PM | Imperial and religious titles |
| Virtues | PAX, VICTORIA, CONCORDIA | Personified virtues on reverses |
| Victory Titles | GER, DAC, PART, BRIT | Conquest or military achievements |
| Dating | COS, TR P, PP | Elements used to date coins |
| Numerals | I, II, III, IV, V | Roman numerals (counts, years) |
Confidence Scoring
The decoder rates confidence based on:
- ✓ Emperor name found (base: 70%)
- ✓ Titles match attested set (+20%)
- ✓ Multiple valid elements (+10%)
90%+ = Very High | 70-89% = High | 50-69% = Medium | <50% = Low
Tips
- Partial legends work! Start with any readable letters.
- The decoder ignores spaces and punctuation.
- Abbreviations are case-insensitive internally.
- Use "?" or "X" for unreadable letters in legends.
- Regularly backup your custom data using the Export function.
